Change was inevitable. Having worked in IT field in India and US for about one and a half decade, I was looking for a change, to do something different. Even though the farmer gene was part of my DNA, becoming a farmer myself
was a considerate decision I made after numerous sleepless nights. It was indeed accelerating and satisfying.
To find a piece of land that me and my wife liked was biggest of the worries. No matter how colorful the description you get from the other end of the
phone line, the "in-person experience" was missing. The biggest challenge was the fact that I worked in US while the land hunt was going on. Fortunately things
fell in place at the right time and I had the opportunity to plan my days off from work and visit India. I guess having helpful relatives solves half the problems. Special thanks to them. :-)
After numerous searches and personal visits, we singled out this beautiful piece of land (about 13 acres) that is situated on the bank of river Hemavathi close to K.R. Pet, Karnataka.
As expected , the land prices have shot up in the last few years in many folds! It could be the fact that some brokers are inflating the prices and/or many urban people like me have started investing in agricultural land creating more demand.
The soil is red with obviously plenty of water available thru out the year. But it was a less cared for or looked after piece of land. The main crop grown is coconut with arecanut inter-planted in some portions. I was lucky, there are couple of mango and gooseberries trees for personal consumption. :-)
Lots of work to do in the coming months like cleaning up, 'reviving' the coconut trees, adding cover crops etc...
Thanks
